You raise some very good questions. As a Canadian, I probably have a slightly different experience in schools than you do. Here we have anti-discrimination policies and laws that are meant to protect teachers and students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to integrate these ideas into all our schools and institutions. Despite the fact that there are laws and policies present to facilitate discussion on homosexuality, homophobia is still very present in societies all over the world, including the United States and Canada. I would encourage you to look into the laws and policies in your school and state. Do they reflect your values? How would you like to see things change? I would also encourage you to try to begin discussions about sexuality with your friends and family that you feel safe with. If you’re really ambitious – write to your elected officials and ask them to make changes.

People fear what they don’t know. They more we are able to share ideas, the easier it will be for people to see homosexuality, bisexuality and heterosexuality as 3 different but equally normal and natural orientations. Hopefully this will lead to further acceptance and respect for gay, lesbian and bisexual people.
