Is it herpes ?

Hello, I have a couple of questions:
1. Is it possible to have a herpes outbreak about 1 year after i had unprotected sex with another partner? No visible signs of herpes were seen on her plus no other symptoms such as: muscle aches, fever, swolling of the glands, etc…..have occured. I’ve had like a pimple like bump on my penis and took away the white stuff now its just red but no pain…..should i be worried.

Hi Jonnie,

The only way that you will know if you have genital herpes is if you get tested. To get tested you need to go see a doctor while there are symptoms (outbreaks). The doctor will take a sample from the sore and they will test to see if the herpes virus is present. If you don’t have any symptoms, then there is no way to tell. After an outbreak the virus is dormant in your system. The only way to know if you have it or not is to wait until there is a new outbreak. There is also the possibility that the “pimple” or bump you have on your penis is caused by something else. It may not be herpes after all. But the best way to know is to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases. Until you get tested, you should use protection to prevent any potential infection. As long as you don’t get tested, there is a potential risk of infecting somebody else.

It is important to know that there are 2 types of the herpes virus. Herpes Simplex 1 is most commonly associated to cold sores, night fever etc. Herpes Simplex 2 is known as genital herpes. Herpes is transmitted mostly by skin to skin contact with an infected person. It is possible to be contagious even when there are no symptoms present. Oral sex can be the cause of the transmission of herpes simplex 1 to the genitals. There is a risk of having transmitted diseases if your relationship has not been monogamous and there has been infidelity. Unprotected sex with somebody else could have brought the virus. Second of all, after contracting herpes, there are usually signs of a 1st outbreak. Those signs can be mistaken for other reactions, such as an allergic reaction and can go unnoticed. For some the reaction is severe, and on others very mild. So it is possible to have missed it.

But to really know weather or not it’s herpes, get tested. I can’t tell you what it is you have, only a test will.
