See your name up in lights: candidacy for Allostars 2007 officially opens

How many names of young volunteers, community groups and public figures can you name who work around the clock in the GLBTQ community in Quebec? These people deserve recognition for their hard work and efforts. It’s time to get your engines started for the second annual Allostars Gala organised by the Quebec Alliance for Queer Youth (QAQY) and will take place February 24.

The okay has been given for candidates to begin submitting nomination forms as of September 1 and have until December 15 at 5p.m.

Allostars is a gala evening that takes place one night a year honouring young members’ work in the GLBTQ community across the province in Quebec. To apply, candidates must be between ages 14 to 30 and fall under one of the nine proposed categories, except one designated for public figures.

Bruno Deschênes, Florent Tanlet, Danielle Julien (Jury’s member), Laurent McCutcheon (Jury’s member), Hugo Valiquette (QAQY’s president) and Maxime Coulombre-Godbout.

“The image of allosexual youth is seen negatively in the media, said Hugo Valiquette, president of QAQY, [The gala] gives us the possibility to make this image positive.”

Nomination period extended

This year, extra time has been allotted (almost an extra two months) for candidates to send in their nomination forms because two categories had to be retracted from the competition last year due to a lack of applicants. There is also less paperwork as a candidate can obtain the application on the internet.

“[Quebec] has a very active community,” said Valiquette at the Gala’s kick-off October 5. “It’s with these smaller actions which overall become big ones. The more we see the realization [of these young people’s work], the more we will speak of it.”

The finalists in each category are decided by a jury of seven recognized members of the queer community in Quebec and will be announced on January 11.

A great jury
QAQY was proud to announce the jury which includes UQAM professor Danielle Julien, Fugues magazine editor Yves Lafontaine, Bloc Québecois federal deputy Réal Ménard, sociologist Irène Demczuk, Gay Écoute president Laurent McCutcheon and comedian Alex Perron.

“Last year [Allostars] was an amazing experience, much because of the makeup of the jury,” said Valiquette. “This year we raised the number to seven because we have too many good candidates.”

The Allostars gala will take place February 24, 2007 at the Delta Centre-Ville Hotel (the same location as last year). To nominate a candidate for the Allostars Gala 2007, visit QAQY’s website at http:// rejaq.alterheros.com.
