Can I be pregnant if I had sex before I started having my period ?

If I had sex when I was only 12 and without a condom and I hadn’t had my first period, can I become a mother?

Hi Rita,

Thank you for sending your question to AlterHeros. I think you are asking if someone can become pregnant before they start menarche (the medical term for the beginning of menstruation, or your first period). It is possible for sexually active people to get pregnant before they start menstruating. Ovulation is the production of an egg, this happens in the middle of your cycle. If the egg is not fertilized by a sperm your oestrogen and progesterone levels will drop and the uterine lining will break down and shed. This shedding is your period. Before a person’s first period they will ovulate and it is possible for them to get pregnant. It is always important to practice safe sex, both to prevent pregnancy and to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. You can find out more about this on our website or by looking at other questions people have asked.
