Ulysse et Alice: A guide to understand Gay and Lesbian parents

Expanding Children’s Understanding of Families with Gay and Lesbian Parents
A guide to accompany the illustrated children’s book « Ulysse et Alice »

MONTREAL – October 20 2007 – The Lesbian Mothers Association has created a French-language resource kit to help teachers and educators working with young children to present and demystify families with same-sex parents. The resource kit is intended to supplement the book Ulysse et Alice, for classroom use.

Ulysse et Alice is a superb French-language picture book for children, published in Quebec, that shows, with humour and tenderness, the reality of families with gay and lesbian parents.Written by Ariane Bertouille and beautifully illustrated by Marie-Claude Favreau, the book introduces Ulysse, a 7-year old boy living with his two mothers, who would love to adopt a pet mouse, Alice. Ulysse was born into a family with two parents of the same sex a reality that is shared by thousands of children born in Quebec.

The resource kit is destined for adults who work with young children. The goal of the kit is to underline the fact that families with gay and lesbian parents are just one amongst a constellation of diverse families that children will encounter in their everyday lives.

Through the use of the book Ulysse et Alice and its accompanying resource kit, adults can demystify this kind of family and also help children who have gay or lesbian parents feel included in the classroom setting.

The kit consists of four self-contained modules; all are designed to help teachers enhance respect and inclusiveness in the classroom. They are available as PDF files to download in full colour, but can be printed in black and white as well.
