Hey Jocelyn !

Thanks for writing to AlterHeros ! As I understand your question, you would like to take testosterone to begin a sex change, but you think that you need to be 18 for that.

I don’t know from what part of Canada you are, but in Quebec, it takes 14 years old to consent to a medical treatment. But, it is true that sometimes, doctors are afraid to prescribe hormones for sex-change to someone who is young, because they are afraid that the person would change his mind, etc. But, I think that taking advices from people who had made the same process is always good. So you can start looking for help groups for people who are doing a sex change in your city. In Montreal, I would tell you to go to Project 10 : www.p10.qc.ca, who are doing counselling, and group meetings for youth.

And, it is always helpful to have the support of your parents, even if you can give your own consent to the medical treatment. So if you feel that they are supportive, feel free to talk to them about it, about your fears, your joys, etc…

Good luck !

François, for AlterHeros.
