Our social mission

AlterHeros is primarily a volunteer community organization, none-for-profit, incorporated in 2003.  We are based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. All staff are volunteers and we do not yet receive public funding.

Our Mission

AlterHeros’ mission is to foster the development of individuals in relation to their sexual orientation, gender identity and sexuality.

The organization has three objectives:

  1. Enable participants to communicate with an interdisciplinary team of mental, physical and psychological health professionals specialized in the field of sexual orientation, gender identity and sexual health;
  2. Provide a space for socialization and structured discussions on thematic topics for the purpose of promoting physical, mental and psychological wellbeing as well as preventing isolation;
  3. Study the issues and the social challenges related to sexual orientation, gender identity and sexuality.

Our Name & Logo

AlterHéros is the combination of “Alter”, which is the Latin word for “Others”, and “Héros”, which is the French word for “Heroes”. AlterHéros is a site which seeks to help the ‘other heroes’ of our society, those who fight for their rights and work to eliminate prejudices. The “A” of the logo represents a mountain that symbolizes the difficulties, problems related to homophobia, and prejudices that must be overcome, while providing a path which leads to the summit, symbolized by the curve on the “A”. The “H” extends to make e acute (“é”), which represents a hand that reach out for support, our second point in the mission statement.
