The privacy of the information you provide to us at this site (your personal information) is important to us.  The following privacy statement governs the collection and use of your personal information by AlterHéros (“we” or “us”). AlterHéros recognizes there are dual privacy concerns for our users. First, you want to know what personal information is collected when you come to this, or any, website. Second, as a person who identifies as a member of the greater LGBT communities or as a person who may have same-sex encounters without identifying with any community, you may have a strong interest in keeping your personal orientations or behaviours private. We have created this privacy statement to demonstrate our firm commitment to protecting the privacy of your information.

When you use www.AlterHeros.com (the Site), you consent to the collection, use and disclosure of your information as described in this privacy statement.

What We Gather and Track
AlterHéros collects two types of visitor data: 1) personally identifiable information that you give voluntarily through newsletter/magazine subscriptions, joining the AlterHéros troop, react to articles, content you post on our Site and 2) tracking information which is collected each time a visitor comes to the site.

We collect information from you in the course of providing you with access to some of the services available at or through the Site. For example, we receive personal information from you when you:

• React to articles available at the Site and provide us with your email address, first and possibly last names and location (city, province, country).
• Submit artworks for the “eXpressions” section, or submit story for “My story” section.
• Upload or submit any enquiry or information which you may make through or using any part of the Site and which includes a personal identifier.

We may ask for information from you in different circumstances, such as when we conduct user surveys. If we do ask you for information, we will always distinguish between the information we require for the relevant access and the information which is optional. You may choose not to supply us with information or not to use a particular service if you do not wish to supply any requested information.

Our server automatically collects additional information about your use of the Site (navigational data). Navigational data includes the type of browser you are using, your IP address, the url you have come from and the time spent at that url, cookies and your domain type and server. This kind of information is collected by many sites and used to monitor use of the relevant site.

Our site might use cookies [small individual data files deposited in each visitor’s web browser]. These cookies are not used to track your personal information.

We employ tracking software to understand which pages and sections of the site people visit. This software does not track the personal identity of visitors. Aggregate non-personal data regarding the site’s traffic patterns, usage and product sales may be shared from time to time with advertisers, sponsors or other partners.

How the Information Is Used
We use your personal information to assist us in: conducting our business, for example, providing the site to you.

Personally-identifiable information in the form of e-mail addresses is used to send newsletters and other alerts that you have signed up for. No other personally-identifiable data is collected except for those who post material for our “eXpressions” and “my story” section. In these instances we may need to collect email in order to properly file the owner’s content and to contact the owner of the content if a user of the site wishes to contact the owner of the content. AlterHéros holds the contact and address information to simplify sorting.

We may also use your personal information for a purpose which is outlined at the time of collecting that personal information or which can reasonably be inferred from the circumstances in which the personal information is supplied. We may also keep and file all information you send to us.

We use your personal information and navigational data to monitor your use of the Site and improve and develop the Site and the goods and services we offer to you. We may rely on your personal information and navigational data to tailor the content we display to you according to your preferences or we may use your personal information and navigational data to contact you if need be. We also collect your personal information and navigational data to use for marketing and promotional purposes.

Survey information which we receive from you will be used to assist us in understanding the demographics and interests of our users. We combine the information you provide us in response to a survey with information received by other survey respondents. We do not personally identify survey information.

We may combine your navigational data with the navigational data of other uses and use the aggregated results to monitor usage of the Site, market to sponsors and advertisers and to improve the Site and our products and services.

Do We Disclose Your Information to Others?
AlterHéros does not rent, sell or otherwise share any personally identifiable information about our users. We will not transfer any personal information to any third parties, unless we explicitly state otherwise at the point the information is collected.

The name which you give us and any pseudonym or nickname which you provide to us may be disclosed at parts of the Site. We may also display details of the ‘nickname’ which you give us and your geographic area.

Otherwise, we do not disclose personal information, such as your real name or email address, unless we are required to do so by law, regulation, an applicable industry code, for safety reasons or where we reasonably believe that you are in breach of our user terms or are engaged in illegal activities.

Your rights to the personal information we hold
You may restrict our use of your personal information. You can ask us to stop using your personal information to contact you about our products and services. You can ask to stop us using your personal information for direct marketing purposes when we contact you for this purpose

You can ask us to correct the data we hold
We aim to keep your personal data accurate and error-free.

At any time, you may ask us to provide you with a list of the data we hold about you, and copies of that data. We will provide you with the data within 40 days of receiving your request.

If you believe for any reason that we are holding inaccurate data about you, you may ask us to correct it.

Your request should specify which data is inaccurate, and what corrections you want us to make. Corrections may also specify data which is incomplete, and the information which is required to update the data. We will make the corrections you ask for within 40 days of receiving your request.

You can ask us to remove the information we hold
You can ask us to remove your personal information we hold about you. We will take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify your personal information. We will comply with your request as far as technically possible and within the limits of our accounting and legal obligations within 40 days.
